The protocol POP3 (
Post Office Protocol) version 3 is
a protocol which allows to recover its electronic couriers
on distant servers. It is often used, as it is simple and
user-friendly.
Every time you open your electronic courier, your application
connects to a server, receives the list of new mails and requests
the download of these on your computer. Then the mails are deleted
from the server.
When the download of new messages is finished, your internet connection is no more used. This protocol is thus very useful, when you have a modem connection or when you use laptop computer which is not permanently connected to internet.
With IMAP (
Internet Message Access Protocol), all your mails stay on the server. Every time you want to read a message, your computer must be connected to internet to be able to go to read from the server. If you use more computers (in the office, at home, or even a laptop), this option would undoubtedly be interesting for you. This system is a bit more demanding in terms of connectivity, but much more flexible in terms of its use.
